Brian Ruane, Kathleen Horgan & Peadar Cremin

This publication coincided with the introduction of the Primary Curriculum, which provides exciting opportunities for change and renewal in primary education. It also provides exciting opportunities for the active exploration of issues relating to global justice and the environment. This publication aims to support teachers in the exploration of these issues by pointing to windows of opportunity for development education within each subject area. It also suggests a range of ideas and relevant texts to facilitate this exploration. Hence, The World in the Classroom seeks to
  • Provide a rationale for the inclusion of development education in the work of primary schools;
  • highlight the opportunities for development education in the Primary School Curriculum;
  • support teachers in planning and implementing a development education programme on a whole-school basis from Infants to Sixth classes.
